Toledo (6-0) captured its second straight tournament title with a thrilling, come-from-behind 3-2 (30-32, 29-31, 30-28, 30-15, 15-9) victory over the host Blue Raiders (2-5) at the MTSU Invitational.
Junior MB Kelsey Culver earned tournament MVP honors for a second straight week with senior OH Rachel Mohler and junior MB Corrie Magnus earning spots on the all-tournament team
The Rockets battled MTSU hard in the first two games only to come out on the short end by two points in each contest.
UT turned the tables on the Blue Raiders though in the third game with a 30-28 victory and utilized that momentum to win the match.
The Rockets controlled the fourth game as evidenced by a scorching .412 hitting percentage and held MTSU to a .075 mark.
"It was a great win for us by having to come back after dropping the first two games," UT Head Coach Kent Miller said. "Playing a match like this can only help down the road and I'm very pleased with how we responded."
Mohler paced UT with 22 kills and a .281 ATK% with Magnus and Culver adding 16 kills (.433 ATK%) and 15 kills (.314 ATK%), respectively.
Sophomores Kate Bean and Lora Sarich led the Rockets defensively with 15 digs apiece. Culver enjoyed a strong defensive night at the net with eight blocks.
Toledo opened the day this morning with an impressive 3-0 (30-14, 30-15, 30-21 ) win over Chattanooga (0-4) and registered a season-high .379 team attack percentage in the process. The only time the Rockets trailed the entire match was when the Lady Mocs took a 1-0 lead in the first game.
Mohler (.333 ATK%) and Kate Bean (.318 ATK%) paced the Rocket attack for the second straight match with 11 kills apiece. Culver posted a team-high .615 ATK%.to continue her strong play to start the season.
In addition to her offensive prowess, Bean led the Rockets with a career-best six service aces and 14 digs. Toledo dominated in the serving department by registering 11 aces compared to Chattanooga's total of one. Junior MB Corrie Magnus was UT's top performer at the net with a team-high three blocks.
Toledo returns to action next weekend when it host the fourth annual Clarion Hotel Westgate Rocket Volleyball Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18. UT will be hosting Dayton, UNC-Greensboro, Oakland and UW-Green Bay.
