Final Stats
TOLEDO, OH - The University of Toledo baseball team (19-31, 8-13 MAC) ended its 2004 home schedule today suffering a 15-5 setback against arch-rival Bowling Green (26-17, 11-10 MAC) at Scott Park.
BGSU used three big innings to snap UT's season-best five-game winning streak, scoring six runs in the third, four in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Falcons' starter Alan Brech (2-0) also kept the Rocket hitters off-balance, facing the minimum through three innings and did not allow a Rocket run until the fifth. Brech lasted seven innings and scattered five hits and allowed one run to earn the victory. Junior Nick Szczur (3-5) took the loss for Toledo after surrendering seven runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of action.
BGSU's Eric Lawson began the day with a leadoff double and later scored from on a sacrifice fly by Josh Stewart for a 1-0 Falcon lead.
The Falcons opened things up in the third by plating six runs on six hits. Mike Barnard began the inning with a double and came home on a single by Lawson for the first run. Another sacrifice fly by Stewart plated Lawson for the second run of the frame. Nolan Reimold added a RBI single, Jimmy Lipari knocked in a pair with a double, and Tyler Wasserman recorded a run-producing single to give the visitors a comfortable 7-0 lead after three innings.
Senior Aaron Rouser accounted for the Rockets' first run in the fifth with a RBI single.
BGSU kept connecting in the sixth frame, though, plating four runs on two hits, and scored another four times in the seventh to bring their total to 15 runs.
Toledo finished off the scoring, tallying a pair of runs in the eighth on solo home runs by seniors Jarrod Resendez and Sean Dobson and added two more in the ninth, including a home run by classmate Doug Yoder, but it would prove to not be enough.
Dobson (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, run scored) and Resendez (2-for-3, HR, RBI, run scored) led the UT offense with multi-hit contests.
Despite the loss, Dobson etched his name in the Rockets' annals once again. He laced his conference-best 24th double down the right field line in the ninth inning to become UT's single season record holder for base hits with 88. The Eastpointe, MI native passed 2003 All-America selection Mitch Maier, who had 87 hits last season.
Prior to the start of today's series finale, 10 seniors were honored for their careers at Toledo. The seniors were Chris Arvay, Sean Dobson, Mitch Hayes, Sean Hurst, Raul Lopez, Derek Overcashier, Jarrod Resendez, Aaron Rouser, Kurt Woeste and Doug Yoder.
The Rockets return to action on Wednesday, May 19, when they travel South on I-75 to again battle Bowling Green in non-conference action. The first pitch from Warren E. Steller Field is slated for 3:00 p.m.
