Birmingham Southern Drops Toledo in 10th Inning, 8-7

Final Stats

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Connor Robertson drove in three runs, including a game-winner fielder's choice in the 10th inning, to lift Birmingham-Southern to a 7-6 decision over Toledo on Wednesday at Scrushy-Striplin Field.

With today's setback, the Rockets fall to 0-8 on the season.

BSC's Scott Billak led off the 10th with a double and moved to third when he beat the throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Jonathan Sanford. After Michael Cline was intentionally walked to load the bases, Robertson hit a chopper to third base. The throw appeared to beat Billak to the plate, but his hard slide knocked the ball out of junior catcher Dan Ruth's mitt to score the winning run.

Robertson (1-0), the sixth Panther pitcher in the contest, also earned the win, tossing a scoreless 10th to earn his first collegiate win. UT senior Mitch Hayes (0-1) absorbed the loss, giving up the winning run in two innings of work.

The Panthers built a 4-0 lead on the strength of a pair of two-run doubles by Michael Wydner and Robertson in the third, but saw that lead evaporate as the Rockets scored three each in the fifth and sixth to take a 6-4 lead.

BSC rallied to tie the contest in the bottom of the sixth when shortstop Matt Barber delivered a clutch, two-out, two-run double to left center, scoring Ryan Griffith and Mac Godwin.

Six of the Panthers' eight hits were doubles, with two of them coming from Robertson. Griffith and Barber also collected a pair of hits for BSC.

Senior Shawn Hurst had a two-run single for the Rockets, who stranded 12 base runners. Classmate Chris Arvay had two hits to lead Toledo.

BSC starter Brandon Hynick lasted 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Junior starter Nick Szczur went five innings for the Rockets, giving up four runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Toledo continues its season-long 19-game road swing this weekend by battling Samford in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
