Valparaiso, IN -
Toledo ran into a red-hot Valparaiso squad tonight as the Rockets (12-5) suffered a 3-0 (30-17, 30-20, 30-28) non-conference setback at the Athletics-Recreation Center. The win extended the Crusaders' school- record 11-match win streak.
Game one saw Valpo's defense shut down the Rockets as UT was held to just six kills and a -.091 hitting percentage, while Valpo put down 14 balls and hit .278. The Crusaders were even hotter in game two, hitting a blistering .432 with 18 kills. The Rockets nearly pulled out the third game but a service error on match point gave Valpo the victory.
"We started out slow and didn't perform as well as we would have liked," UT Head Coach Kent Miller said. "It's a disappointing loss for us heading into an important weekend of conference play. We need to rebound and come back more focused and prepared to play in our matches this weekend."
Senior Rachel Mohler led Toledo with 13 kills and 10 digs and also hit .435 for the night. Sophomore Lora Sarich added 10 digs to lead UT defensively.
Lauren Moulton hit .391 for the Crusaders with 12 kills and five blocks to lead the way.
For the match, Valpo hit .287 while holding the Rockets to .026. The Crusaders also outblocked Toledo 12-1 and held a 51-46 advantage in digs.
Toledo returns to action with a pair of home matches this weekend. The Rockets will host Miami on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. and MAC East Division leader Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 5:00 p.m.
