TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo women's soccer team avenged a 1-0 loss to the Detroit Titans on the road in 2002 with a 2-0 triumph at Scott Park Friday afternoon to improve to 4-5 on the season. With today's victory, the Rockets have won consecutive games for the first time this season.
Toledo used first half scores by senior Melissa Lesage and freshman Nichole Williams and a solid combined effort by goalkeepers Molly Patterson and Jen Whipple to record their second shutout victory in the last four games.
"This was a well-played game by us," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "I liked how we played in the first half. We established a rhythm of play, moved the ball and really worked Detroit hard. Combining all that together, we were able to tire them out and take advantage."
The Rockets jumped ahead 1-0 on a tally by Lesage at the 10:58 mark. Sophomores Brittany Lawrence and Kelly Langenbeck were each credited with an assist. Lawrence played a long ball forward to Langenbeck, who flicked it with her head over the last line of Titan defense to a streaking Lesage. The Trois Rivieres, PQ native, who has now scored a goal in three consecutive games, promptly gathered herself and deposited the ball into the back of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Williams added an insurance goal at 36:18 off a corner kick from sophomore Lindsay Zembower. Williams wedged herself in between a few Titan defenders and snuck a shot past UD goalkeeper Alisson Dube for her second goal of the season and second in as many games for a two-goal advantage.
Patterson notched her third victory of the season as she posted one first half save, while Whipple registered a pair of saves in relief duty. The duo combined for Toledo's second shutout this season.
The Rockets returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 28, when they travel south on I-75 to battle the arch-rival Falcons in Mid-American Conference action at Cochrane Field in Bowling Green. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
