TOLEDO, OH - Junior C Mitch Maier led the way for the Rockets today as Toledo (8-12) outslugged Adrian (9-8) in a non-conference affair, 15-4, at Scott Park. Maier was 5-for-5 at the plate with a career-high seven RBI, three runs scored and two home runs.
Toledo hit three home runs on the afternoon and received a quality pitching performance from junior Raul Lopez and the entire bullpen as the Rockets improved to 4-0 at Scott Park.
Lopez (2-0), a native of Cleveland, OH, was one of six pitchers utilized by Toledo. He threw the first five-plus innings allowing four runs, while striking out six Bulldogs.
Offensively, the afternoon belonged to Maier, who has three home runs in his last two games and is first on the team overall with five roundtrippers. Senior 1B Phil Pikewski also continues to swing a hot bat going 2-for-3 with a home run. In his last two games, Pilewski is 4-for-6 with five RBI and two runs scored. Eight of the nine Rocket starters collected at least one base hit with four players tallying at least two hits apiece.
Toledo scored one run each in the first, second and third innings, five in the fourth, three in the sixth and two each in the seventh and the eighth to bring the total to 15. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough to hoist them past the Rockets.
Toledo returns to action tomorrow hosting Wayne State in a make-up game. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
