KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Anthony Kann scored 18 points and had a game-high 14
rebounds as Western Michigan never trailed in a 78-64 victory over Toledo on
Monday.
Western advances to the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals for
the first time since 1998. The Broncos (19-9) will play Northern Illinois
(16-13) on Thursday night at Gund Arena in Cleveland.
Toledo, eliminated in the first round for the first time since 1999,
finished its season at 13-16.
Kann, getting his eighth double-double of the season, led four Western
players who scored in double figures.
Junior forward Mike Williams (16 points) scored four points in an 8-0 run
over the game's first four minutes that Toledo could not recover from. Bobby
Madison and Robby Collum each scored 11.
Toledo's Keith Triplett scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second
half, but was whistled for a technical foul as the Rockets desperately tried to
come back late in the game.
Western led by as many as 25 points in the first half and pushed it to 27,
47-20, after scoring the first seven points of the second half.
Toledo cut the deficit to 71-58 with 3:36 left on a free throw by Nick Moore
(13 points), but Western hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to clinch the
win.
Western outrebounded Toledo, 43-29, with Kann and Williams combining for 11
offensive boards.
