Toledo, OH - The University of Toledo softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Ball State Friday at Scott Park. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 19-34, 2-20 in the MAC, while the Cardinals improve to 27-17, 15-7 in the MAC.
The Midnight Blue and Gold got another solid performance from senior hurler Kristy Kassotis (7-16), but it was not enough as BSU's Samantha Bushy (9-7) held the Rockets to just three hits. Kassotis scattered eight hits with six strikeouts en route to picking up her team-leading 21 complete game this season.
"Kristy pitched a great game for us today," Toledo Head Coach Michelle Fagnant said. "The constant problem we have been having is we are giving her no support. Half of her losses this year have come with no help from the offense."
The Cardinals tallied their two runs in the first and second innings on the strength of a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI by clean-up hitter Ali Orel.
UT got on the scoreboard in the seventh on a fielding error by BSU shortstop Katie Shea. Junior Kalika Stavroulakis led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Freshman speedster Mary Freese pinch ran for Stavroulakis and later scored on Shea's throwing error, but the Rockets would not get any closer as Laurie Nagel lined out to end the game.
These two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday's pair of contests mark the regular-season finale for the Midnight Blue and Gold. Three Toledo seniors, Tracy Riepenhoff, Nagel and Kassotis, will be making their last appearance in for the Rockets. A special presentation honoring the seniors will take place prior to Saturday's twinbill.
