Junior CF Tony Miller led the way for the Rockets today as Toledo (18-13) outslugged Wayne State (13-9) in a non-conference affair at Scott Park. Miller was 4-for-6 at the plate with six RBI, three runs scored and a home run.
With the victory, the Rockets extended their win streak to five games to equal their season high.
Both teams scored in bunches early as the Rockets led 7-6 after two innings. Sophomore 1B Phil Pilewski continued his hot hitting in the first inning with his fifth homer in three games. Pilewski leads the Rockets in five offensive categories - batting average (.430), doubles (6), homers (8), RBI (28) and slugging percentage (.774).
After things settled down a little, the teams went into the sixth inning tied at 7-7. The Warriors took a 9-7 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth, but the Rockets tied it back up on Miller's two-run homer to center field.
Sophomore SS J.D. Foust then hit a two-run shot to left field in the bottom of the seventh to give the Rockets an 11-9 lead and what turned out to be the game-winning runs.
After Wayne State clawed back to within a run in the top of the eighth, UT exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior 3B Mike Meinhart highlighted the uprising with a two-run homer to center field.
Junior Nick Rowland (1-2) earned the victory with six innings of relief, and freshman Adam Jackson picked up his first collegiate save.
The two teams will battle again tomorrow at Scott Park beginning at 2:00 p.m.
