Bowling Green Completes Softball Sweep Over Toledo, 9-1

Box Score

Bowling Green, OH - The Bowling Green softball team used a 14-hit attack to post a 9-1 win over Toledo Tuesday afternoon. The game, the second half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the "mercy" rule.

"This was clearly a disappointing way for us to start out the MAC season," Toledo Head Coach Michelle Fagnant said. "Having played so well down in Florida, this performance was not the type of softball we are capable of playing."

The Falcons touched UT starter Tracy Riepenhoff for five runs in an inning and a third. The Falcons' seven hits in those two frames included a pair of doubles and a triple.

The Rockets' lone run of the game came in the top of the fourth. Junior shortstop Laurie Linton walked to lead off the inning. With two outs, classmate Kalika Stavroulakis doubled down the left field line, scoring Linton from second.

The Falcons struck for two runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Nikki Rouhana led off the first with a single, and took second on a passed ball. One out later, Jen Domschot tripled to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run. After the second BG out, senior Angie Domschot tripled to score her sister.

BGSU scored three more times in the fifth inning, with Lynsey Ebel's bat doing the damage. With runners on second and third, Ebel came to the plate and clubbed a three-run homer to left to give BG an 8-1 lead.

The Falcons ended the game with an unearned run in the sixth inning. Holly Frantz hit a nubber that the UT catcher Laurie Nagel fielded, but her throw to first was high, and Frantz ended up on second. Wit two outs and Frantz on third, Angie Domschot singled to give the Falcons an eight-run lead and end the game.

McKenna Houle (3-4) got the win with her complete-game four-hitter. She threw just 56 pitches in her six innings, walking one batter and striking out four. For UT, Riepenhoff (2-2) took the loss, allowing five runs in an inning and a third. Winslow allowed four runs (three earned) in her four-and-a-third innings of relief.

"Cortney had a good outing today for us," Fagnant said. "Every time she pitches, she gives us everything she has. No matter what the score is, she always has the same composure. That right now is an asset when we let ourselves get so flustered with one mistake."

Toledo returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 when it travels to Ohio State. The Rockets open their home season with a three-game series against Northern Illinois on Friday-Saturday, March 30-31.
