JONESBORO, AR -
Toledo (3-6) split its doubleheader today
at Arkansas State (5-12) by notching a 4-2 victory in the first
game before falling by a 3-2 margin in the nightcap.
In the series opener, junior Kris Barnswell (1-1) earned his first
victory of the season by pitching seven scoreless innings and
                             scattering six hits.
UT jumped into the scoring column first by plating a pair of
runs in the top of the first inning. With two out, junior 3B Mike
Meinhart and sophomore 1B Phil Pilewski singled and then
advanced to second and third base on a wild pitch from
Indians' P Tony Arthur. Sophomore SS J.D. Foust then
followed with a two-run single to right field.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the Rockets
added a pair of insurance markers in the seventh. Meinhart's
two-run single through the left side drove in redshirt freshman
LF Joel Baas and junior CF Tony Miller who both had
singled to lead off the inning.
Arkansas State then attempted to rally in the ninth following
a pair of Rocket errors. The Indians scored a pair and had the
bases loaded with one out when Head Coach Joe Kruzel
brought in Pilewski to put out the fire. Pilewski induced SS
Brock Buckingham to hit a comebacker to the mound which
resulted in Lane Stafford being thrown out at home. C Kent
Brunen then grounded out to second to end the game.
In the second game, the Rockets again jumped out in front
on an RBI single from Pilewski in the first inning. The Indians tied the contest in the bottom of
the fifth, but UT regained its lead in the top of the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to sophomore
                             2B Taylor Eckel.
The Indians then rallied in their final at-bat of the game. Stafford reached on a one-out bunt
single and CF Nick Martin followed with a single up the middle. After Stafford and Martin
advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Buckingham reached on base on balls. 1B
Kent Brunen then singled to right center to plate the winning runs.
Freshman Nick Szczur (0-1) hurled a complete game for the Rockets and suffered the loss.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday, Mar. 11 with single game at 1
