Rocket Women's Soccer Loses Season-Opener at Detroit

8/30/2000 12:00:00 PM

Toledo, OH - The Toledo women's soccer team fought hard for 90 minutes, but in the end it was the Detroit Titans who prevailed 3-2 in the first game of the regular season for the Rockets. Playing in 90-degree plus heat at Titan Field in front of 150 fans, the Rockets yielded two goals in the final 10 minutes to give Detroit its first win of the season and even its record at 1-1.

"Overall I was pleased with the effort," sixth-year head coach Rj. Anderson said. "We came out a little tight in the first part of the match, but as the game progressed we settled down and I thought we handled ourselves pretty well. We had a couple of lapses on the defensive end toward the end of the match and they (Detroit), being an experienced team, took full advantage of them. I told the ladies after the game that if we eliminate our mental lapses, we can play with anybody."

Toledo got on the scoreboard first in the 16th minute, as freshman Anna Rask found the back of the net on an assist from sophomore defender Alissa DeLong at 15:20.

"Anna, as well as the rest of the offensive players played fairly well today," Anderson said. "I am very pleased with the progress of the offensive unit as well as the midfielders. Playing in this extreme heat, our players stamima looked good."

That would be the only scoring in the first half, as the teams went into halftime with the Rockets holding a 1-0 lead. Detroit posted its first goal of the match in the 67th minute of the match, when sophomore Tanya Tiselj drove a shot past the Rockets goalkeeper, Jennifer Hoffman, to knot the score at 1-1.

Toledo would regain the lead in the 71st minute, as sophomore Corrie Hasenjager, who has been hampered by a stress fracture in her leg this past summer, collected her first points of the 2000 season.

Following the Rocket's final goal of the match, Titan senior Shannon Beal recorded her first goal of the season with 15 minutes to play, bringing the score even at, 2-2.

With time running down, Detroit senior Andrea Will worked the ball wide right and sent a cross in front of the goal. Katie Lukas just got a knee on the ball, deflecting it into the net at and giving UDM the 3-2 victory.

"The whole team played well in the first half," Anderson said. "We lowered our level of play in the second half and let them back in it, unfortunately."

For the contest, Toledo outshot Detroit 9-8, while the Titans recorded four corner kicks to the Rockets three. The contest was also rough and foul-plagued for both teams, as UT ollected 19 team-fouls and the UD committed 12 fouls.

The Rockets will hit the road again this weekend, traveling to California to participate in the Cal State Fullerton Tournament. The Rockets are scheduled to play Cal State Irvine on Friday in a 4:30 p.m. match, before battling host Cal-State Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
