TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Lionel Chalmers hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving
Xavier a 63-61 win over Toledo on Saturday night.
The Rockets (7-3) had taken a 61-60 lead on Terry Reynolds' two free throws
with 3.9 seconds remaining.
Chalmers, a backup point guard, took the inbounds pass from Kevin Frey,
drove the length of the court and hit the game-winning 3 from about 25 feet
before being mobbed by teammates near mid-court.
Toledo trailed by as many as 11 points - 56-45 - with 3:17 remaining, but
went on a 16-4 run to take the one-point lead on Reynolds' free throws.
Chalmers scored 12 points. David West led the Musketeers (8-2) with 20
points and 10 rebounds and Romain Sato added 11 points.
Greg Stempin had 18 points and eight rebounds for Toledo. Robierre Cullars
and Nick Moore scored 12 each and Terry Reynolds added 10 points.
Both teams struggled offensively, with Toledo getting only four more field
goals (16) than turnovers (13). The Rockets shot a season-low 32 percent
(16-for-50) from the floor, including only 8-of-30 from 3-point range.
Xavier hit 50 percent (14-of-28) of its shots in the second half after
making only 8-of-31 (26 percent) before halftime. The Musketeers struggled from
beyond the arc as well, going 3-for-17.
