Rockets’ Offense Takes Over to Complete Sweep of Ball State, 20-3
5/3/2026 4:16:00 PM | Baseball
Toledo sweeps Ball State for first time since 2012
The Rockets (24-24, 18-9 MAC) set the tone with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After the Cardinals (21-26, 14-13 MAC) rallied to tie the game, 3-3 in the third, the Rockets took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, before putting together a nine-run seven-hit inning in the fourth to blow the game open, 13-3. Toledo added another crooked number with seven tallies in the sixth to round out the scoring.
With the win, Toledo earned its first series sweep over Ball State for the first time since 2012 and took its third MAC sweep of the season. The Rockets also clinched its spot in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, to be played at ForeFront Field in Avon, Ohio on May 20-23. The Rockets will remain in a top-four position, and within 2.0 games of first place, with six MAC games to go.
Junior Cole Cahill hit 3-for-4 with four RBIs, three runs scored and two doubles. Junior Alex McCranie and freshman Liam Arsich also tallied three hits while junior Charlie Scholvin scored four runs. The Rockets' offense tallied at least 20 runs for the fifth time this season. All told, seven players in Toledo's lineup had multi-hit games, seven had multi-RBI games and six scored multiple runs.
Redshirt freshman Michael Fliss was stout through 6.0 innings, allowing just three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts. He pitched a scoreless fourth through sixth innings as the Rockets grabbed the lead for good. Redshirt freshman Nate Langbehn worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Toledo's pitching totaled 10 strikeouts to just two walks.
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"That was a massive win for so many reasons. We clinched our spot in the MAC Tournament, swept a good Ball State team for the first time in 14 years, and most importantly we keep pace and are squarely in the hunt to win a MAC championship. Michael Fliss was outstanding on the mound today and the offense was locked in. Everyone had a hand in the win."
