4/3/2026 8:00:00 PM | Baseball
Toledo holds on for 6-4 win in game one before offense explodes for 23-8 win in game two
Â
Toledo (15-15, 11-4 MAC) took the first game behind a strong start from Hayden Frey and homers from both Jacob Payne and a Cade Baker. In game two, Toledo fell behind 5-1 midway through the fourth, but scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Down 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth, the Rockets put together a 14-run onslaught, including two grand slams, and scored 10 runs before an out was recorded.
Â
UT notched its second sweep and fourth MAC series win in five tries. The Rockets will finish the weekend at least tied for second in the league standings.
Â
Payne and Baker each totaled four hits and a home run across the two games, including their game one homers. Charlie Scholvin and Troy Sudbrook each added three knocks. Junior Carson McCaleb totaled seven RBIs in game two, the most in a game for a Rocket this season. Sudbrook tallied five RBIs for the doubleheader while Payne and Scholvin each had four. Toledo scored 20 runs in a game for the second time this season (21 vs. Northern Illinois, March 13).
Â
On the mound, Freshman Hayden Frey (3-0) had another strong start in game one. He went 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Michael Fliss earned his second save, tossing the final 3.1 innings of game one with two runs allowed and three strikeouts. In game two, Sam Rufenacht earned his first career winning decision, while Braden Curry and Arturo Ormaza finished the game with scoreless innings apiece.

Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Really proud of the way we played today. Got some really good pitching from Frey and Fliss in game one and we did enough with the bats to win the game. Game two got off to a rocky start, but super proud of how we fought from behind. The bats came alive in a huge way, with multiple guys having great days. That is a huge weekend and something to build off for next week.
