Toledo breaks open pitchers' duel with late scoring outburst
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team was locked in a pitchers' duel throughout most of the game until scoring bursts in the sixth and seventh innings gave the Rockets a 10-2 victory over Eastern Michigan at Scott Park on Saturday.
Â
The Rockets (13-15, 9-4 MAC) and Eagles (10-18, 5-8 MAC) were tied 2-2 when Toledo scored twice with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. UTÂ tacked on five more runs in the seventh to break the game open. Toledo is now 7-1 in series openers this season, including 5-0 when beginning MAC weekend series.
Â
Junior Cade Baker turned in a four-hit performance, including two doubles with two runs scored. It was his third performance of at least four hits this season. Four other hitters – Liam Arsich, Jacob Payne, Alex McCranie and JP Wagner -- each collected two hits. Wagner totaled three RBIs while Payne and Arsich collected two. Wagner and Payne also hit triples on the day.
Â
Senior Nathan Leininger (6-0) won his sixth consecutive start. The righthander pitched a solid six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out eight. He had at least one punchout in every inning. Redshirt freshman Nate Langbehn tossed the final three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Â
The Rockets and Eagles will wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.

"Good win and proud of the way we battled all game. It was a tight pitchers' duel for the first half of the game. Nate Leininger was solid again and gave us a good quality start. Nate Langbehn was good in relief. They held EMU's offense in check and allowed our bats to come through and put the game out of reach. JP Wagner had the biggest hit of the day to bust things open and give us a lead. We've been here numerous times by winning on Friday. Need to come back tomorrow and play well in the doubleheader.
