Liam Arsich tallies three hits and Carson McCaleb adds a two-run homer

The Rockets (16-18, 12-5 MAC) got the first run on the board, but the Broncos (16-15, 11-6 MAC) took the lead with five runs on four hits in the third inning. WMU then extended its margin to 7-2 with two more tallies with two outs in the sixth. Toledo rallied with two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings and brought the tying run to the plate in both frames, but could not push the tying score across.

Freshman Liam Arsich had a 3-for-5 afternoon with two runs scored, tying his season-high in hits. Junior Carson McCaleb and graduate student Saborn Campbell added two hits, including McCaleb's two-run home run in the ninth inning. Junior Cade Baker also tallied two RBIs.

Starter Hayden Frey (3-1) took the loss. Graduate student Deron Swanson pitched four innings in relief, allowing just two runs, one earned, with six strikeouts.

The Rockets and Broncos will finish the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in a key rubber match. A win would earn Toledo's fifth series win of six MAC series.

- Cade Baker put Toledo in front, 1-0 in the first on an RBI double with two outs.
- Western Michigan struck for five runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead, the Broncos scored one run each on a sacrifice fly, an RBI single and an RBI double, before a two-run double rounded out the scoring.
- The Rockets responded in the fourth, starting the inning with back-to-back singles before JP Wagner brought home a run on a RBI double off the top of the wall.
- With two outs and two on in the bottom of the sixth, an opposite field single and an error plated two runs for a 7-2 Western Michigan edge.
- The Rockets loaded the bases on singles with no outs in the eighth. Pinch hitter Preston Zumwalt then drew a walk before Cade Baker brought home another run with a sac fly to cut the deficit to 7-4.
- An RBI single in the bottom of the eighth plated an insurance run for WMU.
- Carson McCaleb crushed a two-run home run with one out in the ninth to cut UT's deficit in half, 8-6. After Liam Arsich's double put the tying run at the plate, Saborn Campbell flied out to the wall and a foul out ended the game.
