Michael Fliss pitches 4.2 scoreless innings in Sunday start
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo baseball team dropped the rubber match of a three-game series at Western Michigan, falling to the Broncos, 6-3, at Hyames Field on Sunday.
Â
The Rockets (16-19, 12-6 MAC) scored in the top of the first and the game remained 1-0 into the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos (17-15, 12-6 MAC) scored six times on four hits and took advantage of two Toledo errors. The Rockets scored twice in the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, but could get no closer. Despite the defeat, Toledo will be in a top-three MAC standing position after today's games conclude.
Â
Redshirt junior Troy Sudbrook drove in two of Toledo's three runs. Junior Jacob Payne drove in the other in a 2-for-5 afternoon. Freshman Liam Arsich recorded his second multi-hit game of the series with a 2-for-2 day with two walks.
Â
Redshirt freshman Michael Fliss started and went 4.2 shutout innings with two hits allowed and four strikeouts. He worked out of several jams in the scoreless effort. Nate Langbehn (1-1) took the losing decision. Sophomore Braden Curry and redshirt junior Ryan Hughes combined for the final 2.2 scoreless innings. Curry has 13 strikeouts over 5.2 innings pitched in his last two appearances.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Another really tough game where we outplayed them for eight innings, but that one half-inning sunk us. We imploded in the sixth and gave them six runs. It's hard to win doing that. We can't feel sorry for ourselves because nobody else does. We need to turn the page and get ready for another pivotal weekend against a very good Miami team."
