Five Rockets earn singles wins in season opener
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team kicked off the 2026 dual season with a 5-2 victory over Oakland at Twos Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.Â
After losing the doubles point, Toledo (1-0) won four-straight singles matches to clinch the match win. Freshman Anastasia Akuginova got on the board first with a 6-0, 6-1 decision on the No. 6 court. Sophomore JJ Scholten and junior Jone Ibanez each claimed straight-set wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts, respectively.
Freshman Isabella Barretto won her first collegiate dual match and clinched the win for the Rockets with a 6-3, 6-3 decision on the No. 2 court. Sophomore Neha Guru earned a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win on the No. 4 court to conclude play.
Oakland (0-1) took the early lead by securing the doubles point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The doubles duo of Neha Guru and Isabella Barretto picked up their first doubles win of the year with a 6-1 decision on the No. 1 court.
Quoting Head Coach Tracy Mauntler
"Today was a really good first match. We're a bit rusty, as everyone is, but I think we dominated in singles play and we know that's where our strength lies. We have a lot of work to do in doubles, but that was expected. I expect this group to get better every single time we compete."
