Â
The Rockets (21-25, 14-11 MAC), who have come back to win from at least five runs down three times this season, sent the Eagles (13-30, 8-14 MAC) to their 11th straight loss. It was also Toledo's third extra-inning victory of the season.
Â
"From being up, then falling way behind, to battling back to take the lead and having to walk it off, that game was quite a range of emotions," said Head Coach
Rob Reinstetle. "That was an exciting win which I hope will propel us forward. (Relief pitcher)
Brennan McCune was outstanding and gave us a chance to claw back and
Jacob Tabor was good at the end. We didn't get a lot of hits today, but the ones we had really counted.
Caden Konczak had two huge run-producing hits and
Charlie Scholvin produced a big hit to become the winning run.
Owen Jackson's fly ball wasn't a hit but became the biggest swing of the game."
Â
Junior
Caden Konczak supplied two key hits and three RBIs on the afternoon, while senior
Owen Jackson, junior
Garret Pike and freshman
Charlie Scholvin each scored two runs. Toledo took advantage of 10 walks and three hit batsmen, with Jackson, Pike, senior
Scott Mackiewicz and freshman
Luke Walton drawing two walks apiece.
Â
The 13 combined walks and hit batsmen combined with timely hitting allowed UT to score 10 times despite being held to six hits, with the first safety not coming until the seventh inning.
Â
Toledo's pitching began with senior
Grant Umberger, who threw 5.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits and striking out six. Junior
Brennan McCune pitched 2.2 scoreless innings on just two hits. Freshman
Jacob Tabor (3-0) worked the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Â
The Rockets and Eagles will play the middle game of the series on Saturday before closing out the set on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. on BCSN and ESPN+. Toledo will honor its 12 baseball seniors before Saturday's game.
Â
"I'm happy for the team and proud of how they battled back today," said Reinstetle. "Tomorrow is Senior Day and we need to send our seniors off with another victory."
