Rockets Defeat Buffalo, Claim Back-to-Back MAC Regular Season Championships

Toledo clinches No.1 seed in MAC Tournament with 6-1 win over Bulls on Thursday

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team clinched its second consecutive Mid-American Conference title with a 6-1 victory over Buffalo at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts on Thursday.

The title is the first back-to-back regular-season championships for Toledo (15-5, 8-1 MAC), which clinched the No. 1 seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Head coach Tracy Mauntler's team will host the 2024 MAC Tournament next Friday-Saturday, April 26-27.

Thursday's win was also the 15th consecutive at home for the Rockets, dating back to January of 2023. In a déjà vu moment from last season, the Rockets won the program's first MAC Championship almost exactly a year ago after defeating Buffalo 4-3 at home on April 21, 2023.

On a sunny spring day, the Rockets set the tone quickly by winning the doubles point to establish an early 1-0 lead. Seniors Cassie Alcala and Julia Kuszynski swept the top doubles court in 23 minutes, and the No. 2 duo of senior Sloane Teske and sophomore Sanjana Tallamraju clinched the team point in a 6-4 win over UB's Arza Deniz Comlek and Laura Koralnik.

In singles play, Teske did not waste any time, taking just 53 minutes to take down Arza Deniz Comlek in two sets on the No. 2 court. Alcala had a 6-0 sweep and lost only three games to Jagmeet Kaur in the second set (6-3) to win the No. 1 court and put Toledo at match point. Senior Shalini Tallamraju was up 5-3 in her second set at the No. 4 court, before her younger sister Sanjana Tallamraju won the No. 3 court by retirement to clinch the match. Shalini Tallamraju finished minutes later to push the Rockets ahead 5-0 in the match. Kuszynski won Toledo's final match at the bottom court, 6-4 and 6-0 vs. Mariana Carvajal Torres.

Buffalo's Esmee Andresen had the last victory of the afternoon and was the only team point for the visitors. Sophomore Audrey Moutama won the opening set but lost the second and third sets to end her nine-match winning streak and first loss in conference play.

Toledo will play its final match of the season at Ball State (7-13, 3-4 MAC) on Sunday afternoon, in a rematch from the finals of the 2023 MAC Championship tournament.
