Rockets Fall to Michigan 6-4 at Fifth Third Field

Toledo rally thwarted as Wolverines score two runs in eighth for the win

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit in to tie the game, but an eighth-inning hit and error proved to be the difference, as the Rockets fell to Michigan 6-4 in front of a crowd of 1,373 at Fifth Third Field in downtown Toledo Tuesday night.

The Rockets dropped to 19-18 on the season, while Michigan improved to 18-20.

"I want to thank all of the fans that showed up tonight and made it a great environment to play," said Head Coach Rob Reinstetle. "Playing here is always a big deal for our guys and I'm grateful for the support we received. It was a very good college baseball game. Even though the outcome wasn't what we'd hoped for, we played hard. Fighting our way back down 4-0 to make it 4-4 late shows how resilient we are. We didn't make enough pitches or get the timely hit in the end."

Junior Garrett Pike went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, reaching base three times on the evening. It is the sixth time this season that Pike has driven in at least three runs in a game. Junior Trey Wright drove in Toledo's other run and went 2-for-4 at the plate, his fifth game this season with at least two hits. Juniors Brayden White and Caden Konczak, along with freshman Charlie Scholvin, rounded out the Rockets' hit total with one each.

Seven different Rockets took the mound on Tuesday, started by senior Yianni Skeriotis, who went 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Freshman Jacob Tabor also went 2.1 innings, not allowing a run nor a hit and striking out three batters. Tabor has now pitched 6.0 scoreless innings across his last two appearances. The decision went to sophomore Jackson Bergman, who dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Toledo will finish the homestand with a conference series against Miami (14-19, 8-10 MAC) this Friday-Sunday, April 19-21. First pitch for Friday's series opener is set for 3:00 p.m. at Scott Park.

"We turn the page and get ready for another big MAC weekend when we take on a talented Miami team at Scott Park," Reinstetle said.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Wolverines loaded the bases in the top of the second, then drove home a run on a sacrifice fly.
  • A two-run, two-out single in the third extended Michigan's lead to 3-0.
  • Michigan drove home another run with two outs to make it 4-0 in the fourth.
  • Brayden Wright's RBI single to center in the bottom of the inning put UT on the board.
  • Garrett Pike roped a two-out double to draw Toledo within 4-2 in the fifth. In his next at-bat, he jumped on the first pitch and drove a two-run double to left-center to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh.
  • With runners on second and third, an infield hit and error on the same play plated both runners and gave the Wolverines a 6-4 lead midway through the eighth.
