TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team clinched match point early before settling on a 5-2 victory vs. Miami on Friday afternoon. The win was the Rockets' 13
th straight at home (6-0 this year)Â and puts UT atop the Mid-American Conference standings with an untouched 4-0 league record and an 11-4 overall slate.
"The squad was ready for battle today," head coach
Tracy Mauntler said. "Taking five of the six first sets is tough against a talented team like Miami. I'm proud of the way my players put their foot on the gas early to control the match. We have so many people playing well right now and they really trust each other on the court."
Despite the final score, the three final singles matches were decided in super tiebreakers after UT clinched match point.
Senior
Cassie Alcala was the first Rocket done in singles play after taking two sets from Nishitha Saravana on the No. 1 court. Sophomore
Audrey Moutama put UT at match point with another two-setter from the No. 5 court. Senior
Sloane Teske got off to a fast 6-1 first-set win, but Catherine Denysiewisz-Slowek flipped the game by taking the second set by the same margin. Teske came out on top in the 7-5 tiebreaker to clinch the match.
Senior Julia Kiszynski fought back after losing the opening set 6-1 to Lauren Joyce, forced a tiebreaker after taking the second set 7-5, and won the decider 10-8 to push Toledo ahead 5-0 in the match.
Freshman
Gaby Rondon put up a tough fight from the No. 3 court. She won the first set by an intense 7-6(3) score, was swept in the second set by Emilia Valentinsson, and ultimately fell 12-10 in the super tiebreaker for the Miami point. The RedHawks won the final match of the afternoon after
Shalini Tallamraju won the opening set 6-3 and was defeated by Sara Zalukar in the final two sets, 7-6(6), 10-8, for the final team point.
Toledo's No.1 doubles team of Alcala and Kuszynski clinched the important doubles team point to give their team the 1-0 edge heading into singles play.
Toledo will see Miami (9-8, 3-1 MAC) again next Friday, April 5 at the Miami Tennis Courts in Oxford, Ohio.
