Toledo Downs Miami 4-3 for Second Victory Over RedHawks in a Week

Rockets win sixth straight match and improve to 5-0 in MAC play

OXFORD, Ohio – Senior Shalini Tallamraju came through for the Toledo women's tennis team to clinch match point in a 4-3 victory at Miami on Friday afternoon. The win improved the Rockets (12-4) to 5-0 in Mid-American Conference play and extended their regular-season conference winning streak to 16 matches.

The Rockets also defeated the RedHawks by a 5-2 margin one week ago at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts.

"I'm proud of the way we competed today," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Miami is a great team and to beat them back-to-back weeks is extremely tough, both outside and then indoors today. We definitely have a target on our back, and I'm impressed by the way our players just keep stepping up."

UT won the doubles point, and senior Sloane Teske took just over an hour to put UT ahead 2-0 after defeating Nishitha Saravanan in two sets from the No. 2 court. Sophomore Audrey Moutama kept her own winning streak alive at six matches with her two-setter from the No. 5 court to put Toledo at match point.

Miami made some noise by taking the No. 1 and No. 4 courts back-to-back to make it 3-2 overall.

Tallamraju opened her match with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot, dropped the second set to Emilia Valentinsson 6-4, but steamrolled 6-0 in the third set to clinch the match for Toledo. Miami ended the match minutes later with a three-set win from the No. 6 spot.

Teske's two combined wins on Friday tie her with Martina Wodzinski (2007-10) for 154 career combined wins which ranks second in program history, behind program leader senior Cassie Alcala (167).

Toledo will play its second installment of the Battle of I-75 vs. Bowling Green (7-10, 0-5 MAC) on Sunday afternoon at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
