TOLEDO, Ohio – For the second time this season, Sophia Wiard has been named the MAC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Wiard graduated with her bachelor's degree in finance this past May and is currently working towards her MBA. As an undergraduate student, she carried a 3.88 cumulative GPA. She previously won the award on Dec. 13 following Toledo's wins vs. Michigan and Loyola Maryland.
Wiard was terrific in the Rockets' 94-52 win vs. Hillsdale last Saturday. She scored a game-high 20 points and added seven assists, six rebounds and five steals with just one turnover against the Chargers. She also knocked down 6-of-8 shots from the floor while going 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
The Muskegon, Mich. native has reached the 20-point mark in back-to-back games and ranks seventh in the MAC in scoring (14.3 PPG). Wiard leads the league in assist/turnover ratio (2.27) and ranks second in assists (5.00/game).
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. Each week schools are asked to nominate one female and one male among the sports that are in season at the time. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
