RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Barend Botha continued his strong start to the season by tying for eighth place at nine-under par 207 to lead the Toledo men's golf team in Tuesday's final round of the VCU Shootout. The Rockets finished in a ninth-place tie in the team standings at 15-under par after shooting a nine-under par 279 today on the par-72, 6,927-yard CCV Tuckahoe Creek Course.
The reigning Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Year, Botha carded a three-under par 69 today to lower his season stroke average to 69.3. He has now shot par or better in each of his six rounds this fall and has registered 18 Top-10 finishes in his Rocket career.
Senior NJ Botha also fired a three-under par 69 today to tie for 19th place at five-under par 211 (70-72-69). Senior Jamie Tofte Nielsen tied for 33rd place with a two-under par 214 (73-70-71), while senior Palmer Yenrick finished in 51st place at one-over par 217 (74-73-70).
Junior Jamie Butler finished in 77th place at 10-over par 226 (79-76-71) after shooting a collegiate-best one-under par 71 today.
"It was nice to rebound from yesterday's disappointing performance with a decent round today," Head Coach Jeff Roope said. "The guys know what their potential is and understand it. They'll keep working diligently to improve. It's a long season and we just have to keep building on our positives."
James Madison and Lipscomb tied for first place with impressive 33-under par 831 with the Bisons winning a one-hole playoff to capture the tournament title. The Dukes' Daniel Cheng earned medalist honors with a tournament-record 16-under par 200 (64-67-69).
The Rockets will return to action in three weeks when they head south to Jonesborough, Tenn. for East Tennessee State's Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 8-10.
