Toledo Takes Series Opener at Ball State with 5-1 Victory

Rockets and Cardinals will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Toledo softball team returned to the win column on Friday afternoon with a 5-1 victory in its series opener at Ball State (16-18, 6-6 MAC). The win improved the Rockets' record to 12-18 overall and 5-7 in Mid-American Conference play.

"Good things happen when we play our game and today showed that," head coach Jessica Bracamonte said. "In the circle, on defense, and at the plate we trusted our plan and made adjustments throughout the game. We talk a lot about having each other's backs on the field and it was fun to watch them do that today. Sidney Griffith set the tone offensively with the first at-bat of the game and we were able to push two runs across to score early. Sophia Knight attacked the zone and trusted her defense, which was extremely solid today. I am proud of how we approached the game in every aspect, now we reset and refocus for tomorrow."

Knight went the distance against the Cardinals, scattering six hits, allowing one run and striking out six batters for her fourth win of the season. Anna Dixon went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, one RBI, and two stolen bases.

Toledo led from the outset after scoring two runs in the first inning. The Rockets then scored twice in the third and added one more insurance run in the sixth for a 5-1 advantage. The Cardinals loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Hannah Dukeman lined out to end the game.

The Rockets and Cardinals will close out their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
