TOLEDO, Ohio – Both junior
Pawit Sornlaksup won his 40th straight singles match and the Toledo men's tennis team moved to the top of the Mid-American Conference standings with its 6-1 win over Buffalo on Friday afternoon. The victory improved the Rockets to a 7-2 MAC record, tied with Western Michigan.
In addition to winning 40 straight singles matches, Sornlaksup has also won 21 straight league matches since last April.
"We expected today to be pretty brutal conditions and our guys were 100% ready for the long haul," head coach
Al Wermer said. "Our singles play was not perfect but we were mentally tough, which is our motivation."
Sornlaksup's win from the No. 1 court pushed Toledo ahead in the match 2-1 after UT lost the doubles point to the Bulls.
Krzysztof Wetoszka got back in the win column after taking down Cheng Tang in two sets to tie the match 1-1. After Sornlaksup's victory at No. 1,
Matias Olivero's win at No. 5 put the Rockets within one win from clinching the match.
Luis Kleinschnitz lost his first set at the No. 6 court, then won the second set and clinched the match with a 6-3 third-set final score.
Marko Galic and
Adam Kovac were each in the midst of their third sets from their respective courts when Toledo secured its sixth-straight match win.
Marko Galic defended the No. 4 court in his three-set victory and
Adam Kovac earned the sixth and final singles court win for the Rockets from the No. 3 court.
UT will play its final regular-season match and honor its senior class on Sunday vs. Binghamton (4-18, 0-8 MAC) at 11:00 a.m. at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts. Sunday's match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and televised locally on BCSN.
