Toledo Named MAC Regular Season Co-Champions Following Sunday’s Victory over Binghamton

Rockets defeat Bearcats 4-3 to secure No. 1 Seed in MAC Tournament

TOLEDO, Ohio – Senior Luis Kleinschnitz clinched match point for Toledo in its 4-3 win vs. Binghamton on Sunday afternoon in front of a home crowd for the final time this season. The win improved the Rockets to 16-5 overall with an 8-2 Mid-American Conference Record to share the title of Regular Season Co-Champions with Western Michigan (12-9, 8-2 MAC).

The Rockets and Broncos split their head-to-head matches this season. UT lost 4-3 on March 19, but won 6-1 on April 9 to secure the No. 1 seed into the tournament because of point differentials. This is UT's first regular-season title under Head Coach Al Wermer.

"As they say, the scoreboard doesn't reflect the artistic quality of the competition," Wermer said. "Today wins no beauty contest, but we're not complaining."

Prior to the start of Sunday's match, Al Wermer and his team honored seniors Luka Jankovic, Luis Kleinschnitz, Max Skaer and Krzysztof Wetoszka.

Pawit Sornlaksup had the fastest finish this season to take down Michael Pawlowics in two sets and put Toledo ahead in the match 2-0. His win extended his winning streak to 41 matches and maintain his undefeated MAC record at 22-straight dual matches.

After Binghamton won the No. 6 court, Wetoszka kept Toledo ahead in the match after winning the No. 2 court. The Bearcats evened the score at 3-3 after winning two very close three-set finals from the No. 3 and No. 4 courts.

For the second match this weekend, the deciding court came down to Kleinschnitz. He took the first set, lost a close second set, and won the third set to clinch Toledo's seventh-straight match win.

Toledo secured the doubles team point from two 6-2 finals from Sornlaksup and Wetoszka at the No. 1 spot and clinched by Kleinschnitz and Skaer at the No. 3 court.

The 2023 MAC Men's Tennis Championships will take place in Kalamazoo, Mich. Semifinals will take place on Saturday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Championship match is scheduled for Sunday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m.
