FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Toledo women's tennis team closed out its non-conference play with a 6-1 victory vs. Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday afternoon. The Rockets went 2-1 in their first two matches over the weekend, including a win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday and a loss to USF on Sunday.
The win puts the Rockets, ranked No. 74 in the latest ITA rankings, at 9-3 on the season before hosting Eastern Michigan in conference-opener at home next Saturday. FGCUÂ was ranked No. 70 going into the match.
"This was an enormous win for the program," head coach
Tracy Mauntler said. "We've really amped up our doubles play during this time here in Florida. That will be key going into MAC season. I'm so proud of the battle I saw in my players today. FGCU has been tearing it up, so this win means a lot."
Toledo started off strong against the Eagles, winning the doubles point thanks to No. 3 court duo
Cassie Alcala and
Laura Morera and court No. 1 duo
Sloane Teske and
Mariona Perez.
FGCU tied the match at 1-1 from a two-set win at the No. 2 court, but Toledo ruled the rest of the way. Alcala won the No. 1 court and
Sanjana Tallamraju won the No. 5 court, both in three sets, while the remainder of the courts were finished in two sets. Perez's singles win from the No. 3 court was her third straight and was the only Rocket to go undefeated in singles play in Florida.
Toledo will open up Mid-American Conference play next Saturday, March 18 vs. Eastern Michigan at Twos Athletic Club.
