Rockets Clip the Eagles, 7-0 in Conference-Opener

Toledo wins fourth-consecutive MAC opener on Sunday vs. Eastern Michigan

TOLEDO, Ohio – The No. 58 Toledo women's tennis team came out victorious in its first Mid-American Conference match of the 2023 season, sweeping Eastern Michigan at Twos Athletic Club, 7-0. The win was the second-consecutive for the Rockets, who improved to 10-3 and 1-0 in MAC play. The victory marked the fourth-straight MAC-opening triumph for Toledo as well as its fourth-straight win vs. the Eagles.

"We got a great start with the doubles," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. " I'm thrilled with the adjustments and improvements we made with our doubles in the last month. EMU played us really tough in singles but we are battle-tested, and I'm really confident in how our players deal with pressure."

Sloane Teske and Mariona Perez won the first court of the afternoon from the No. 1 doubles spot, the duo's fifth-straight win together. Cassie Alcala and Laura Morera clinched the doubles team point from the No. 3 court to give Toledo a 1-0 match lead going into singles play.

The Eagles put up a tough fight in singles play but it was the Rockets who ran away with the match to claim all six courts. Sanjana Tallamraju collected the first individual win of the afternoon in a two-set decision from the No. 5 court. She was followed by her sister Shalini Tallamraju at the No. 3 court. Alcala clinched the match from the No. 1 spot.

Teske lost her first set at the No. 2 court, but won the second set, and ultimately won third set for the match. Perez defended the No. 5 court for the fourth-straight time, and Julia Kuszynski secured the sweep with a win in a tiebreaker from the No. 6 court.

Up next for Toledo is Northern Illinois on Friday, March 24 in DeKalb, Ill.
