KENT, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team opened its weekend series at Kent State on Friday with a 7-6 victory.
The Rockets (13-11, 6-4 MAC) scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first and never trailed for the rest of the evening. The Golden Flashes (16-9, 4-3 MAC) did tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, but UT scored the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh and the bullpen held firm in the final innings.
Toledo and Kent State will not play on Saturday due to inclement weather expected in the area. The series will conclude on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
"That was a big win versus a good team," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We pitched well today, especially in the late innings. Kyle Pijaszek and Camryn Szynski were both really good in relief of Noah Johnson. The offense was equally as good, we kept scoring and putting pressure on them. Jeron Williams and Mason Sykes both had good at-bats all day. We have two games left and need to get greedy and take this big series.
Pijaszek and Szynski combined to throw 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out four while issuing zero free passes. The pair relieved starting pitcher junior Noah Johnson, who struck out eight in 4.1 innings of work.
Junior Jeron Williams continued his torrid pace at the plate with a 3-for-4 game, extending his hitting streak to 32 games and his on-base streak to 34 games. All three of Williams' hits went for extra bases (two doubles, one triple) and he also stole his 20th base of the season. The Archbold, Ohio native is now hitting an astounding .500 (23-for-46) in MAC play and slugging .826.
Sophomore Brayden White drove in two runs on Friday and senior Mason Sykes hit his eighth home run of the season. Sykes now has 31 career home runs, four away from tying Dan Sherwood's program record of 35 career home runs.
