Rockets Stay Hot with 6-2 Win at Miami

Toledo has won six of last seven and will go for series sweep on Sunday

OXFORD, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team kept rolling on Saturday with a 6-2 road win at Miami. The Rockets, who have won six of their last seven games, now sit at 8-5 on the season and 2-0 in MAC play.

The RedHawks scored runs in each of the first two innings to take an early lead, but once Toledo's offense settled in it scored six runs on 12 hits. The offensive production proved to be more than enough, as UT shut out Miami the rest of the way.

"That was another really nice win today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "Miami's starter was really good. I've told our guys if they just pitch and keep us in the game our offense will find a way to score. Jack Walker did just that. He pitched well and gave us a good start. Cal McAninch was nails out of the bullpen and closed it out with a huge effort. The offense did a great job of battling and found a way to put some big swings on a few balls. Both Owen Jackson and Mason Sykes hit huge home runs for us. We have won the series, but we aren't satisfied with that. Sweeping is really hard to do, but that's the position we are in and I expect us to come ready to play tomorrow."

Junior Jack Walker made the start and struck out eight through 4.1 innings. Senior Cal McAninch tossed 4.2 innings in relief and was lights out, striking out five in 4.2 innings while allowing just two hits and one walk. McAninch, who has appeared in six games and totaled 17.0 innings on the year, now sports a 2.12 ERA out of the bullpen.

At the plate, sophomore Owen Jackson blasted his seventh home run and senior Mason Sykes hit his second homer in as many days. Sophomore Garret Pike had an excellent day as well, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Toledo will go for the series sweep on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

How it Happened

  • Miami took a 1-0 lead on a home run by Zach MacDonald in the top of the first.

  • The RedHawks' lead improved to 2-0 in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run single.

  • Owen Jackson flipped the script with one swing of the bat in the top of the fifth. His three-run home run soared over the fence in right field and gave Toledo the lead. Brian Fry then made it 4-2 with a sac fly.

  • Mason Sykes made it 6-2 with a two-run shot in the top of the seventh. He lifted a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall to put the Rockets ahead by four.

  • Cal McAninch was terrific out of the bullpen, retiring the first six hitters he faced and stifling the Miami hitters in the 4.2 innings he pitched.
