Toledo Completes Weekend Sweep with 7-3 Victory at Miami

Rockets have won seven of their last eight games

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team completed its weekend sweep of Miami on Sunday with a 7-3 win in Oxford.

The Rockets, who had been on the road since March 2, will return home having won seven of eight games on their spring break road trip.

Toledo's offense continued to fire on all cylinders, scattering 10 hits and taking advantage of Miami miscues to score seven runs in Sunday's finale. The pitching staff combined to walk just three, and an errorless defensive effort capped a well-rounded win to conclude a long road trip.

"I'm really happy with the way we came out and finished the weekend," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "We got a great start by Matt LeLito and the offense kept finding ways to score runs. It feels great to go 7-1 on an 11-day road trip, and to finish the trip with a MAC sweep is awesome. We can enjoy this a little and then it's back to work next week against a very good Wright State team and MAC favorite Ball State."

At the top of the order, junior Jeron Williams and sophomore Garret Pike combined to go 5-for- 8 with three RBIs and four runs scored to set the tone for the offense. Sophomore Owen Jackson also added an RBI double and has now driven in a run in 11 straight games.

On the mound, junior Matt LeLito made his second start of the year and threw six strong innings. Juniors Kyle Pijaszek and Camryn Szynski pitched the final three innings, limiting the RedHawks to just one run on two hits.

Toledo visits Wright State this Tuesday, March 14 before visiting last year's MAC Champion Ball State next weekend.

How it Happened
  • Caden Konczak's RBI single in the top of the first put Toledo on top 1-0 before Miami had a chance to bat.
  • It didn't take long for the RedHawks to tie the game. An RBI double from Dillon Baker knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second.
  • The Rockets took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third on a pair of errant pitches. Garret Pike scored on a passed ball, and then two at-bats later Owen Jackson scored on a wild pitch.
  • Toledo put up another crooked number in the top of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Jeron Williams made it 5-1 on a two-run triple, and Pike drove him in two pitches later on an RBI double.
  • Miami pulled within three after plating runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
  • Jackson's two-out double brought home Williams in the top of the eighth tacked on the final run of the game to bring about the final score of 7-3.
