Toledo Splits Opening Day of UCF Invitational

Rockets win opening game 3-1 vs. Penn and fall 2-0 to UCF on Friday

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Toledo softball team split its opening day at the UCF Invitational on Friday in Orlando, Fla., winning 3-1 vs. Penn before falling 2-0 to UCF in the nightcap.

Erin Hunt had a perfect game going into the bottom of the fifth vs. UCF when it was broken up by a single to left field by Jada Cody. The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Rockets could not make up the difference in the top of the seventh to pick up the loss. 

In the win over Penn, the Quakers opened up scoring in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, until Jenna Kroll hit a two-run single in the third to give Toledo a 2-1 lead. The Rockets would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth to secure the first win of the tournament by a 3-1 margin. Sophia Knight went the distance vs. the Quakers, giving up two hits and striking out four batters for the win.

Toledo (5-10) will play two more games tomorrow, starting with a 10:00 a.m. game vs. North Dakota followed by a 3:00 p.m. gave vs. UCF.

Game 1 – Toledo 3, Penn 1
  • Penn got on the board first with a sacrifice fly at the top of the first.
  • Lexi Eckman singled up the middle and had back-to-back stolen bases to get to third base, but was stranded at the end of the first.
  • Jenna Kroll hit a two-run single up the middle to give Toledo its first lead of the day, 2-1 in the third.
  • Riley Mohr hit an RBI single to push the Rockets ahead, 3-1, in the fifth.
  • The Quakers went down six batters in a row over the sixth and seventh innings to end the game.
Game 2 – UCF 2, Toledo 0
  • Sidney Griffith got the first hit of the game in the top of the third but was left on base.
  • UCF broke up Erin Hunt's perfect game with two hits in the bottom of the fifth, but neither runner made it back home.
  • The Knights scored two runs in the sixth off a fielder's choice and an RBI double to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Rockets went down 1-2-3 in the seventh and to pick up the loss.
