Rockets Pull Away in 78-65 Win at Oakland

Khera Goss leads the way with 21 points in UT’s fifth-straight win

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Toledo women's basketball team won its fifth consecutive game on Sunday night at Oakland, a gutsy 78-65 victory at the OU Credit Union O'rena.

The Rockets (6-2) withstood a first-quarter surge from Oakland (4-5) and overcame a season-high 23 turnovers to claim the road win. After trailing by five at the end of the first quarter. Toledo put the clamps down on Oakland's offense and outscored its opponent 36-20 over the next 20 minutes of play. The fourth quarter was high-scoring and choppy, featuring 20 combined fouls between the two squads. UT outpaced Oakland, 29-27, in the final period and went 13-of-15 from the free throw line to ice the game down the stretch.

"Sometimes the game isn't as pretty as you want it to be," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "I thought we gutted it out and did what we had to do to win. I'm really proud of how well we shot the ball from the free throw line tonight. We did a good job of not getting caught up in the chaos. They want to make you play chaotic and we did a good job of not getting rattled. I also want to commend Khera Goss, she had one of her best games as a Rocket, and Emmi Rinat really stepped up too."

Goss led the way offensively, scoring a career-high 21 points while connecting on 6-of-9 shots from the floor. The first 20-point performance of Goss' career helped lift the team offensively on a night that saw leading scorer Quinesha Lockett leave the game with an injury in the first quarter. Rinat was one rebound away from a double-double, scoring 15 points while grabbing nine boards which are both single-game highs in her Toledo career.

Sophia Wiard, Sammi Mikonowicz, and Hannah Noveroske all added nine points apiece and Mikonowicz led the trio with seven rebounds. Wiard dished out a game-high seven assists.

Toledo was 42.9% from the field, connecting on 21-of-49 shots, was 32-of-38 from the free throw line, marking its busiest game at the charity stripe of the season. The Rockets also won the rebound battle by a 37-31 margin.

Oakland was led by Brooke Quarles-Daniels, who scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half. The Golden Grizzlies were 21-of-57 (36.8%) from the floor and 16-of-26 from the free throw line.

Toledo heads to Duke this Wednesday, Dec. 20 and will host Hillsdale on Saturday, Dec. 30 in its final non-conference game of the year. MAC play begins on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Miami.

  • Oakland used a 14-0 run to open up a 16-7 lead with 4:51 to go in the quarter.

2nd Quarter
  • Toledo pulled within on early in the second quarter on a pair of free throws by Wiard and a layup by Cook, putting the score at 18-17.
  • An and-one by Ella Weaver at the 2:13 mark of the quarter put UT within two, 26-24, and Emmi Rinat's basket on the next possession tied the score at 26-26.
  • Goss made a couple free throws with 23 seconds left in the half to give Toledo a 29-28 lead, its first since the early stages of the game.
  • That score would hold steady heading into halftime, giving the Rockets a one-point advantage.
  • Toledo overcame a slow first half from beyond the arc (0-for-5) by knocking down 11-of-13 free throws to keep itself in the game.
3rd Quarter
  • Oakland's Miriam Ibezim made two early free throws to put her team back on top, but the Rockets surged ahead with an 11-2 run to take a 40-32 lead with 4:25 to go. Goss and Rinat knocked down back-to-back three to kickstart the scoring spurt.
  • Nan Garcia's free throws at the 3:17 mark pushed Toledo's lead into double-digits for the first time, 44-34.

  • Twenty combined fouls and 31 combined trips to the free throw line in the fourth quarter delayed the inevitable, as the Rockets' lead never dipped below 11 in the final period.
  • Goss capped her career-high scoring effort with two free throws in the final second to wrap up the win.
