Toledo Tripped Up at Duke, 70-45

Sophia Wiard pours in season-high 21 points in defeat

DURHAM, N.C. – The Toledo women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night at Duke in a 70-45 loss at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Rockets (6-3) hung tough with the Blue Devils (7-4) in the first half and forced 10 turnovers in the first two quarters. Duke outscored UT 21-6 in the third quarter and that put enough distance between the two teams for the remainder of the night.

"I think we fought for three out of the four quarters tonight, and we fought really hard," head coach Tricia Cullop said. "The ball just wasn't dropping for us in the third quarter. You need to score consistently against a really good team like Duke. I was proud of our effort tonight. I thought we battled hard against a good team on the road."

Sophia Wiard contributed the bulk of the offensive production in the absence of Toledo's leading scorer Quinesha Lockett. Wiard led all players with a season-high 21 points, the lone Rocket to reach double figures. Nan Garcia added seven points and grabbed five rebounds, while Hannah Noveroske contributed five points and matched Garcia's rebound total with five.

Duke's leading scorer was Kennedy Brown, who scored 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Jadyn Donovan had a double-double for the Blue Devils with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rockets return to the court on Dec. 30 at home to host Hillsdale at 2:00 p.m. To purchase women's basketball tickets, visit the Rocket Athletic Ticket Office at the Sullivan Athletic Complex in Savage Arena, contact the Rocket Athletic Ticket Office at 419-530-GOLD (4653), or go online to UTRockets.com/tix.
