Toledo Edges Out Central Michigan 1-0 for First Conference Win of Season

Mia Leonetti scores her second goal of the season in UT’s shutout on Sunday

TOLEDO, Ohio – Junior Mia Leonetti's second-half goal proved to be enough to earn Toledo a 1-0 shutout victory over Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon. The win is the first in conference play for the Rockets (4-5-2, 1-2-1 MAC) this season and the third shutout of the year.

Toledo and Central Michigan came out of halftime deadlocked at 0-0 when sophomore Kaema Amachree set up Leonetti to tap the ball by CMU's Allison LaPoint and off the left post in the 51st minute to take a one-goal lead. The Chippewas tried to create some offense, but the Rockets' defense held them off until the final horn to secure the 1-0 shutout.

"I thought we were great all game," head coach Mark Batman said. "We withstood some pressure in moments in the second half and the girls bent but didn't break. The first half was very strong from us, and we could have capitalized on a few chances to make it easier on ourselves. Overall, I am very proud of the group for getting their first MAC win of the season. We told them to enjoy it, and then get back to it on Tuesday as Ohio will be a very tough opponent."

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brielle Young made six saves to record her third shutout of the season. Junior Olivia Dault dished out four of the Rockets' 14 shots.

Goals and Key Moments
  • 8' | Central Michigan's Elizabeth Chlystun took the first shot of the game, but it was blocked by junior McKenna Schultz.
  • 27' | Sophomore Brooklyn Whitehead's shot deflected off the fingers of CMU keeper Allison LaPoint, but she picked it up before the ball crossed the goal line.
  • 51' | Amachree fed Leonetti across the center of the field, and Leonetti stuffed her shot to the back of the net for the first goal of the game, 1-0.
  • 78' | Kerry Stewart wound up to score for the visitors, but Young timed her jump perfectly to snatch the ball near the upper left corner to keep Toledo in the lead.
