Rockets Sail Past Vikings, 6-1

Toledo wins all six singles matches on Sunday to improve to 2-1 on the season

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team got back into the win column Sunday afternoon, defeating Cleveland State 6-1 at Twos Athletic Club. The Rockets (2-1) won all six singles courts after the Vikings (1-1) took two of the three doubles courts for the doubles point.

"Taking all six singles matches against any team is tough, especially against a team that won their regular season conference championship last season," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "This squad has high expectations for themselves, and they are relentless competitors."

Cleveland State had the first victory of the afternoon, winning the No. 3 doubles court by a 6-2 decision, before junior Cassie Alcala and senior Sloane Teske tied things at 1-1 following a 6-1 victory on the top court. It was the Vikings who had the last say, however, winning the No. 2 doubles court to take a 1-0 match lead into singles play.

It was all Rocket power during singles competition. Teske tied the match at 1-1 after winning the No. 2 court, her sixth-straight singles match, by a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Junior Julia Kuszynski won her first singles match of the season, a two-set decision from the No. 5 court. She was followed by junior Shalaini Tallamraju at the No. 3 court win, and senior Mariona Perez, who clinched the fourth point and the match for the Rockets with a two-set win on the No. 4 court.

The final two courts were decided in three sets with senior Laura Morera winning at No. 6 and Alcala taking the No. 1 court. Morera won her opening set 6-1 and held on for the 6-3 third-set tiebreaker win. Alcala was defeated in her first set 4-6, came back to win the second set by the same margin, and then secured her ninth-straight singles match with a 6-1 third-set final score.

Toledo will head out to its first road match of the season this Friday Jan. 27 at Youngstown State.
