Toledo Dethrones Horizon League Champ Youngstown State, 5-2

Cassie Alcala notches 10th-straight singles win in Rockets' road victory

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Toledo women's tennis team won its third-straight match Friday night at defending Horizon League Champions and NCAA Tournament participant Youngstown State, 5-2. The victory, Toledo's first on the road this season, improves the Rockets to 3-1 on the season.

"This was probably the closest 5-2 match I've ever been a part of," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "YSU played us really well. They are a well-coached team who competes hard. I'm incredibly proud of the way my squad competed today. Their maturity is starting to show as they are playing their best when under pressure."

Toledo trailed 1-0 in the match after Youngstown State took the doubles point. Eliska Masarikova and Elisa Rigazio won the No. 1 court, and clinched the doubles team point with a win from Moka Ito and Lili Minich at the No. 3 court.

Toledo recovered to dominate single play. Sloane Teske tied the match at 1-1 with a quick two-set victory from the No. 2 court, marking her seventh-straight singles win. YSU took back the lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win from the No. 5 court, but the Rockets controlled the remainder of the match. Sanjana Tallamraju won the No. 6 court in two sets to tie the match, and Mariona Perez put the Rockets ahead 3-2 with a two-set victory. Cassie Alcala clinched the match with a three-set comeback on the No. 1 court. Alcala won the second set over Eliza Rigazio after falling in the opening set to ultimately win the match in the tiebreaker. Alcala's win extends her winning streak to 10 matches. Shalini Tallamraju earned the final victory of the night, a three-set decision from the No. 3 court.

Toledo will head over to Pittsburgh, Pa. to face Duquesne tomorrow afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
