Rockets Sweep Doubleheader over RedHawks at Scott Park on Friday

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team won both games of its doubleheader against Miami at Scott Park on Friday, its first home games of the 2022 season.

The highlight of the day was junior Darryn Davis' electrifying walk-off home run to end game one. With two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning and the Rockets trailing 7-6, Davis launched a two-run home run to right field to stun Miami and claim a marathon 8-7 victory.

Sophomore Kyle Jones proved to be the hero in game two, striking out a career-high 13 in Toledo's 3-2 win. After giving up a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning that made it a one-run ballgame, Jones struck out Miami's final two batters to shut the door.

"I couldn't be prouder of this team than I am right now," head coach Rob Reinstetle said "They battled hard all day long and were rewarded with two wins. Game one was back and forth and so many guys contributed. Cal McAninch and Camryn Szynski were great out of bullpen and kept us in the game, which allowed the offense to keep scoring. In the end it came down to a walk-off home run by Darryn Davis to seal the deal. It was such an awesome moment for the entire team to feel that energy.

"Game two was highlighted by another ace-type outing by Kyle Jones. He kept the Miami offense at bay all day and we did just enough to at the plate to win the game. As good as we feel right now, there is more work to do. Tomorrow we have a chance to win the series, which would be huge as the race for the MAC moves on."

Davis went 3-for-6 at the plate in game one with three RBIs, two coming on his game-winning homer, and a triple. Sophomore Jeron Williams and redshirt freshman Trey Wright both drove in two runs and had two-hit performances, with Wright smacking a home run in the bottom of the sixth. Eight of Toledo's nine starters scored a run in the first game.

Five pitchers saw time on the mound, with sophomore Camryn Szynski stealing the show with five outstanding shutout innings and four strikeouts.

Jones led the charge in the second game with his complete-game victory. His 13 punchouts mark the fourth time in his career he has struck out at least 10 in a game and they're the most in a game by a MAC pitcher this season.

At the plate Wright went 2-for-3 with a home run, his second of the afternoon. Junior Mason Sykes went 2-for-3 with a home run as well, his seventh of the season.

Toledo and Miami will meet again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The series will conclude with a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday that will be televised on BCSN. The game on Sunday has been moved up from its original start time of 3:00 p.m.

How it Happened (Game 1)
  • Miami scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first to take an early lead. A bases-loaded walk in the top of the third gave the RedHawks a 2-0 lead.
  • Williams tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run triple in the bottom of the third. Freshman Garret Pike opened the inning with a bunt single, and sophomore Scott Mackiewicz walked two batters later, then both scored on Pike's triple.
  • Toledo plated two more runs in the bottom off the fourth to make the score 4-2. Wright's RBI single drove in the go-ahead run and senior Zach Schwartzenberger followed that up with a sac fly.
  • Both Miami and Toledo added runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles, bringing the score to 5-3 through five.
  • Miami took a 6-5 lead with a three-run top of the sixth, with Zach McDonald's two-run home run doing the bulk of the damage.
  • Wright tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Neither team pushed across another run until the top of the 12th when Miami's McDonald singled in a run to make the score 7-6.
  • Freshman Brian Fry reached on a bunt single to lead of the bottom of the 12th, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout. With the tying run just 90 feet away. Davis decided to end the game with one swing, launching a two-run blast to right field for a walk-off homer.

How it Happened (Game 2)
  • The RedHawks took advantage of a Toledo error in the top of the first to extend the inning and drive in the first run of the game to make it 1-0.
  • Sykes gave UT the lead with a two-run blast in the bottom of the third.
  • Wright's second home run of the day led off the bottom of the fourth and put the score at 3-1.
  • Jones was lights out in game two, his only hiccup coming in the bottom of the seventh. A one-out home run by Miami's Brian Zapp made it a 3-2 ballgame, but Jones struck out the final two batters of the game to cap the doubleheader sweep.
