Nathan Leininger pitches six shutout innings vs. Jacksonville State in his second start of the season
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Toledo baseball team came away on the short end against Jacksonville State in a 2-1 pitchers' duel at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium on Saturday.
Â
The Rockets remained scoreless with the Gamecocks through seven innings of play. An error in the eighth inning on a double play attempt brought home the winning runs. Toledo got a run back in the ninth, but could not push across the tying score.
Â
Senior Nathan Leininger had an impressive second start of the season, throwing six shutout innings of two-hit baseball.
Â
The Rockets will look to salvage the series finale tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. CT.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"That was a classic pitchers' duel today. Nate Leininger was simply amazing and kept putting up zeroes. Their guy was good too and kept our bats at bay. On their two runs, I thought they took McCranie out at second base and the inning should have ended without any runs scoring, but the umpires felt differently. We finally mustered some offense in the ninth, but it was too little, too late."
Â
"We've played five winnable games. We have to get our offense going earlier in games to turn the tide. Nothing to do but get off the mat and come back ready to play tomorrow."
