HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Toledo baseball team captured its first series win of 2022 with Sunday's 12-6 victory at High Point.
The Rockets' bats plated 11 runs in the first five innings to take a commanding lead, and the bullpen withstood a late Panther rally.
"I'm super proud of the team and how they came out and played today," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "
Connor Brandon was dominant on the mound, which was really good to see. The bullpen was a little shaky at times, but they had some good moments as well. The offense was outstanding with just about everyone in the lineup contributing. It was really encouraging to see our hitters come alive this weekend. We also had another great defensive game. Overall I'm really happy with how we are playing right now. The challenge will be if we can do it again next weekend against a solid Elon team. With MAC play on the horizon, we have one more weekend to sharpen our game before we start our run through MACtion."
Brandon pitched five scoreless innings while striking out six to earn the win. Five different pitchers saw time out of the bullpen, with junior
Cal McAninch, sophomore
CJ Lewis, and sophomore
Cole Rodriguez all turning in scoreless outings.
Offensively, Toledo's lineup collected 16 hits on Sunday. Junior
Mason Sykes had an outstanding day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs. Senior
John Servello went 2-for-4 with a couple stolen bases and four runs scored, and junior
Darryn Davis tallied three hits and drove in three runs.
Sophomore
Jeron Williams registered three hits and two stolen bases, while freshman
Garret Pike was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
The Rockets visit Elon next weekend for their final non-conference series before MAC play starts the following weekend at Akron.
How it Happened
- Toledo got off to a quick start on Sunday, scoring a couple runs in the top of the first. Redshirt freshman Trey Wright drove in the first run on a sac fly, then two pitches later Davis drove home Servello with a single into left field to make it 2-0.
- Sykes' two-run homer highlighted a three-run third inning to push Toledo's lead to 5-0.
- The Rockets continued to pour it on with four runs in the top of the fourth. Servello started the scoring with an RBI single, and Davis followed that up with a sac fly to bring in another UT run. Sykes and Pike both tallied RBI base hits to round out the fourth inning.
- The hits kept on coming in the top of the fifth; Davis and Sykes both singled in runs to push Toledo's lead to 11-0.
- High Point put a dent into the Rockets' lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers pushed across four runs that inning, highlighted by Justin Ebert's two-run single.
- Sykes scored the final run of the game for UT in the top of the ninth, scoring on a passed ball to put the score at 12-4.
- High Point scored a couple runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little too late.
