BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Toledo softball team lost a pair of contests on Friday in the opening day of the Blazer Classic in Birmingham, Ala. The Rockets (2-5) ended up on the short end of a 13-2 (5 inn.) decision to Murray State in the opening game and an 8-0 (5 inn.) final to host UAB.
In the morning contest, Murray State took a 6-0 lead thanks to a five-run second inning. Toledo made it 6-1 on an RBI single by
Macey Moore in the bottom of the second but the Racers scored three more runs in both the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 12-1. UT sophomore
Jenna Kroll smacked her second home run of the season to cut the Rockets' deficit 12-2 in the fourth. The Racers added one more run in the fifth inning to close out the scoring.
In the afternoon game, host UAB took a commanding lead with a four-run opening inning, followed by three more runs in the second. The Rockets had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth with no outs, but could not convert as they ended the inning with a groundout to first base and back-to-back strikeouts. The Blazers added one more run in the fifth inning on an RBI single to make the final score 8-0.
"We told the team afterward today that it's never as good or as bad as it seems," head coach
Joe Abraham said. "Today wasn't great, but we're a lot better than that. We need to put together a solid game both defensively and in the circle and we'll start winning games. Right now one of those two areas is breaking down almost every game and we need to keep plugging away."
Toledo will face Murray State and North Dakota tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. (CT) and 12:30 p.m. (CT) respectively.
GAME 1 – Murray State 13, Toledo 2 (5 Inn.)
- Murray State's Logan Braundmeier scored on a sacrifice fly to put her team up by one run at the top of the first inning.
- The Racers scored five runs including a two-run homer from Sierra Gilmore followed by a solo home run from Gracie Osborn to take a 6-0 lead.
- Junior Macey Moore hit a two-out RBI single to get the Rockets on the board in the second inning.
- Murray State crossed home plate three more times in the top of the third to extend the lead to 9-1.
- A two-run double by Murray State turned into three runs following an infield error by the Rockets in the top of the fourth to make the score 12-1.
- Sophomore Jenna Kroll hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth.
- MSU scored on an error in the fifth to increase the Racers' lead 13-2.
GAME 2 – UAB 8, Toledo 0 (5 inn.)
- UAB scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
- UAB's Lilly Crowe hit a two-run homer with no outs in the bottom of the second, and Aguilar singled to bring around Reese Lowery for another run and extend UAB's lead to 7-0.
- Toledo stranded two runners in scoring position with no one out in the top of the fifth.
- Alyssa Aguilar pushed the Blazers' lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single.
