TOLEDO, Ohio - Senior forward
JT Shumate of the Toledo men's basketball team has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today. Shumate currently holds a 3.827 grade-point average as a middle childhood education major.
A Newark, Ohio native who was a CSC First-Team Academic All-American last year, Shumate averaged 22.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game while shooting 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the field to help Toledo to a pair of victories last week.
In the Rockets' 83-75 road win at Northern Iowa last Tuesday, Shumate led the way with 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. He then scored 20 points or more for the fourth straight game when he poured in 20 points and blocked a season-high three shots in a 69-68 home victory over Canisius.
Shumate leads the MAC with 19.5 ppg and 1.5 bpg and ranks fifth with a 56.9 FG%.
Toledo (7-3) will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 17 with a trip to Huntington, W. Va. to face Marshall (9-2).
