TOLEDO, Ohio – Sophomores
Ellie Pool and
Grace Turski scored for Toledo to lift the Toledo Rockets to a 2-0 shutout of Western Michigan on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Paul Hotmer Field. The victory improved Toledo to 7-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in Mid-American Conference play and gave the Rockets their sixth shutout in their last seven games.
"This was a pivotal conference game for us," Head Coach T.J. Buchholz said. "We know Western has some tremendous attacking players and they were going to pressure our defense. Our defense really rose to the occasion and kept a good Western team from scoring. Our backline and
Emma Boutorwick continue to play lights out."
Toledo outshot the Broncos (2-7-0, 0-2-0 MAC) by an 18-9 margin and tallied nine attempts in each half. Boutorwick continued her stellar play in goal by stopping each of the four WMU shots on goal for her sixth shutout of the season.
Turski tallied the Rockets' first goal at the 37' mark when she knocked home sophomore
Caylee Jozefov's cross from the right corner. Pool then provided an insurance marker when she put home a loose ball following a long free kick from
McKenna Schultz.
"One the offensive end, I thought we could have been a little better in front of the goal in the run of play," Buchholz said. "We still got two great goals though from
Grace Turski and
Ellie Pool. They both had tremendous games today."
Toledo will remain home for its next match when it hosts Kent State at Hotmer Field on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
