YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University of Toledo baseball team visited Eastern Michigan on Tuesday night, falling to the Eagles by a score of 13-2.
The Rockets got off to a rocky start and couldn't recover. Eastern Michigan exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning, sending 16 batters to the plate and recording nine hits. Toledo was able to get on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but could not overcome the early deficit.
Danny O'Reilly drove in a run for the Rockets on an RBI single, and scored on a wild pitch two batters later.
Cal McAninch pitched the final five innings for Toledo, his longest outing of the season, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Tuesday night's game was the first of four makeup contests scheduled between the Rockets and Eagles. The two teams will meet next Tuesday for a seven-inning doubleheader and the following Tuesday for a nine-inning contest as well.
The Rockets take a break from conference play this weekend, visiting Virginia Tech for a three-game series.
How it Happened
- Eastern Michigan took control of the game early by scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the first. The first 14 EMU batters reached safely, with the only out in that span coming on the basepaths.
- Toledo was able to score a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to get on the scoreboard. Chris Meyers led off the inning with a double, then scored on O'Reilly's single into left field for the first Rocket run. Scott Mackiewicz doubled down the line in right field, putting him and O'Reilly in scoring position, then the latter scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-2.
- The Eagles added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single to make the score 13-2, which would hold as the final score in their run-rule victory at Oestrike Stadium.
