TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo baseball team wrapped up its weekend against arch-rival Bowling Green with an emphatic 19-2 run-rule victory on Sunday to clinch the series.
The Rockets were in control of Sunday's game from the outset, putting up crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the first five frames to put the Falcons in an insurmountable hole.
"What a way to cap off the series against our rivals down I-75," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "We played a complete game from top to bottom. It all started on the mound by getting a quality outing out of
Wyatt Jefferson. We played errorless baseball on defense, but the most important factor today was obviously the offense. We really came to play with the bats. It wasn't just one guy either; everyone had a hand in it today."
Fourteen different players either had a hit or drove in a run for Toledo on Sunday.
Chris Meyers was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a walk,
Darryn Davis drove in three runs and had a home run, while
Nicky Winterstein and
John Servello each tallied two RBIs a piece.
Scott Mackiewicz was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot and scored a game-high four runs.
Trace Hatfield,
Mason Sykes, and
Marcus Strother all scored twice, with Strother recording three walks in three at-bats.
Jefferson enjoyed a great day on the mound, throwing four scoreless frames and striking out five to earn the win, his second of the week.
Jason Young and
Bryce Davis also saw time out of the bullpen.
Toledo will play at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday evening before heading to Northern Illinois next weekend for a four-game series.
"We have nine MAC games left and we are right in the thick of the race for the championship," Reinstetle said. "We need a little help, but all we can control is how we play these next nine games and see how it all shakes out."
How it Happened
- Toledo took an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Mackiewicz reached first after being hit by a pitch, then later came around to score after three straight walks. - The Rockets added three more runs in the bottom of the second to make it 7-0. Servello doubled to left field to drive in a run before Meyers scored two more with a base hit into right field.
- Davis hit a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the third to make it 9-0 in the bottom of the third.
- The biggest inning of the afternoon was the bottom of the fourth, during which the Rockets scored seven runs to open up a monster 16-0 lead. The inning started with a run scoring on a passed ball, then Davis drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. The next five hitters reached base with a walk, three singles, and a double to push the Rockets' lead well into double digits.
- Bowling Green was able to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs to put the score at 16-2.
- Toledo once again put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to bring its total to 19. Wyatt O'Brien drove in the first run of the inning before Ryan Thompson's single and Justin Diaz's sacrifice fly brought in the final two runs of the game in UT's dominant victory.
