TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo men's tennis team fought a close battle against Ball State at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday morning before falling to the Cardinals, 4-3.
The match was originally scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start, but was pushed up to 10:00 a.m. to account for potential rain in the afternoon.
"Tough one to take," head coach
Al Wermer said. "It's never surprising to me to go 4-3 with Ball State, win or lose. It's also never surprising to have a lot of crazy twists and turns, and today's match was no different."
Toledo started the match by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Wojciech Szczesny and sophomore
Krzysztof Wetoszka teamed up to win on the No. 3 court, starting Saturday's match off on the right foot. After Ball State won on court No. 1, the Toledo tandem of freshman
Adam Kovac and senior
Thawin Suksathaporn claimed a victory on the No. 2 court to clinch the point.
Singles play was a different story though, as the Cardinals were able to win four of the first five matches to come away with the win. Ball State won on courts No. 1, 2, and 5 to take a 3-1 lead, then Wetoszka handled his opponent on the No. 3 court to keep Toledo alive and make the score 3-2. The Cardinals were able to post a three-set victory on the No. 4 court, however, to clinch the match.
Toledo visits Northern Illinois and Western Michigan next weekend.
