BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Toledo baseball team exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to fuel a 14-3 win at Samford on Saturday.
Â
"That was a long time coming, but I'm really proud of the guys," head coach
Rob Reinstetle said. "It was a great team win. So many guys had a hand in the win today. The offense did a great job today, but like I've said all year, everything starts on the mound.
Jordan Power gave us a quality start today and
Layne Schnitz-Paxton finished it off. Tomorrow is an important day as we have a chance to put together another complete performance and win a series."
Â
Mason Sykes had a terrific day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBIs, the first 7-RBI performance by a Rocket since Matt Hansen in 2017.
Nicky Winterstein proved to be an effective spark at the top of the lineup, reaching base in four of his five plate appearances.
Chris Meyers collected two hits and two RBIs, and
Trace Hatfield had a pair of hits as well.
Â
Power struck out three and allowed three runs in six innings of work. Schnitz-Paxton earned the save with three shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out four.
Â
The rubber match of this series will be on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
